When geneticists conduct breeding experiments, crossing two parents, the resulting offspring are known as a filial generation.
The word filial comes from the Late Latin filialis, meaning "of a son or daughter." When scientists breed organisms, they are usually studying the way certain traits pass from the parental generation to the filial generation. In genetic notation, these groups are labeled P for the parental generation and F1 for the first filial generation. Crossing organisms from the F1 produces the second filial generation, F2.
